These things drive me crazy

Indians are way ahead. They are leading in most parts of the world – US covered!

Their main mode of study – learn everything and anything by heart. Understanding will come later.

So is intelligence merely good memory?

I certainly dont agree with that statement either. you cant memorize everything and call yourself " intelligent". The ones who are really intelligent are the ones who can react to bad and paniking situations in a calm and peaceful manner.

They are leading in most parts of the world - where exactly? give me a example. people who memorize( and i am not saying all indians are like that) by definition can't lead.

So is intelligence merely good memory? most definitely not!

Just a look around

There are plenty of 'memorisers' among us too... and i can't think of any other way to pass AL Chemistry without memorising stuff - which is actually a sad state of affairs...

Anyway, what we are probably not decided on is the definition Intelligence. What does it mean to know an encyclopedia by heart? What does it mean to be Intelligent? what does it mean to be "Educated"?

Those who understand will appreciate the concepts better. They may provide better analysis than one who just memorised and applied certain things (such as in Chemistry, Math and even at work).
I believe we need both:those who critically analyse what they learn, and those who just apply what they are thought. A good constructor needs to use certain formulae, but need not know indepth derivation of it :)
